Hey Friend,
I’m sure you’ve heard of Bob Ross before.
Big afro.
Loves Trees.
God of painting.
Yeah, that guy.
In 2020, when the pandemic hit the world, he took me on as a mentee.
We spend hours together, exploring the art of his craft.
I felt so lucky to be in his presence.
Here was my best piece of artwork from our journey together:
Okay, okay…. I admit, my mentorship was all through youtube. (I’ve spent hours watching Bob Ross videos).
Even if he was still alive today, he would have no idea that I exist.
Or the fact that he played such a big role in my life by painting pictures.
But to be honest…
He did a lot more than just teach me to paint.
He taught me a secret about life.
One of his famous sayings is:
“We don't make mistakes, we have happy accidents”
And through his teachings, he repeats it time and time again.
But I still couldn't get it through my head.
Originally, I started painting for fun, but it caused me so much stress.
I wanted to be perfect at it.
I got so angry every time I made a mistake on my canvas.
To the point where I wanted to stop in the middle of my painting and just give up.
The problem was that I wasn’t enjoying the process.
I was only focusing on the end result.
I didn’t see my mistakes as ways to learn, but rather a reminder of my lack of skill.
It's hard to break that mindset.
Shift it by realizing that our mistakes are the cornerstone of our growth.
Through that failure we find success.
Life is trial and error.
Be present and have fun with it.
