I was terrified to start my first business.
For years, I suffered through constant anxiety (that could have been easily avoided).
I wasted hours reading business books and watching YouTube videos — trying to find the perfect path forward.
The result? I knew a lot… but had no experience.
This is the trap most people fall into.
They’re convinced that they need to choose the perfect path. One in which failure doesn’t exist.
They spend months of their life in indecision, weighing their options and keeping room open for potential opportunities. But this hurts them more than they realize.
This goes beyond business... things like:
- “Should I start going to the gym?”
- “Should I go back to school?”
- “Should I start a new job?”
When you fail to choose a direction to go in, you get stuck in limbo. You waste your greatest resource — time (and the ability to compound it). Years later, you think “Wow… I wish I would have done that thing.”
When you procrastinate and give in to perfectionism. You push off failure and hardship until a later date. You stay stuck. You accept uncertainty and prevent yourself from achieving your desired outcome.
The big problem? Uncomfort and struggle are still going to be there when you start (if you ever do).
The greatest leaders in history all have 1 thing in common — countless failed trials.
But the upside? They learn never to make the same mistake again.
Here’s how to break the cycle of indecision (forever).
Your 1st Step Into the Unknown
“The risk of wrong decision is preferable to the terror of incision” — Maimonides
There is a major opportunity cost to indecision.
When I finally started my first business… I learned more in the 1st month than I had in the past year.
My biggest regret is not starting sooner. If I began 2-3 years earlier, I’d be so much farther now. I can’t reverse time — but I can make sure I don’t repeat this mistake.
Indecision is the greatest killer of progress. Especially when you’re starting something new. It’s terrifying to jump into the unknown without any idea of what the outcome will be.
But when you reduce your time to action, you grow faster and get more experience. This helps you make better decisions in the long run.
It’s okay to make stupid decisions… all of us do. The formula for making great decisions is never to repeat a bad decision. But you won’t know the quality of a decision until you try it for yourself.
You become more confident when you decide on a course of action (even a bad one). You ward off potential regret and become more aligned with who you want to be.
You can achieve 2x or 3x faster because you’re not wasting time thinking about doing something. You’re just doing it.
The best part?
You don’t have to let failure ruin you. You can commit to a path and still change directions at any time. But the skills and experiences you earn will be permanent.
Here are the 5 simple steps I wish I had known earlier.
How to Destroy Perfectionism Forever (The Ferony 5)
The worst of all human ailments: indecision” — Napoleon Hill
1) Create a vision for your future (Solidify your end goal)
When you solidify your endpoint, all you have to do is take small steps toward it consistently. Not all of the steps will be perfect, but it will keep you moving in the right direction.
2) Research and Talk to People You Trust
If you are unsure… ask others what your strengths are. Talking through things with others can help you face your fears and see them for what they are.
3) Make a 3 month Plan
Spend 60 min on this — No more, no less. How will you get to your end goal? What will you do in the next 90 days to move you closer to fulfilling your life’s vision? A simple, yet powerful step.
4) Execute the Plan for 90 Days
Do what you ask of yourself. Nothing more, nothing less. You can do anything for 90 days. Yet most never do.
5) Reflect (and Redirect if Needed)
At the end of the 90 days, decide if you want to continue down this path. If you choose to move in a new direction, select a harder goal than the one you had before. It’s not quitting, it’s pivoting.
