Hey Friend,

I had dreaded this moment for weeks.

The dry Texas heat rushed into my car as I opened the door. Dust clouds filled the air from the nearby construction sites. The scorching sun sat high in the sky, mocking me.

Today was the day.

I stepped out of the car and my feet shuffled up the long driveway.

Every cell in my body was telling me to retreat.

But it was too late.

I stopped at the door and knew what I had to do.

My hand curled into a fist and I knocked on the door. The sounds of my knocks echoed through their house.

I waited.

My tension eased as the door remained shut.

The house was silent.

But I knew someone was home because two cars sat in the driveway.

I knocked again.

And then it all happened at once…

The door swung open and behind it, a stranger emerged. He was tall with shaggy dark hair. His eyes were full of confusion as he asked, “Hi, can I help you?”

My body froze. I couldn’t get a word out. We sat there eyeing each other down for what felt like hours.

Then I blurted out: “Hi… I’m Rocky with Aqua Life… we do water testing… do you want a water test?”

His brow furrowed.

“Nah, we’re good,” he said and slammed the door in my face.

A rush of relief washed over me. My mouth curled into a grin of self-pity as I realized how dumb I just looked.

As I walked back down the driveway, I thought to myself, “That wasn’t thaaat bad.”

This was my first day working as a door-to-door salesman.

The months after that were tough.

Every time I went to work, my mind would play the same tricks on me.

It filled my body with resistance and fear. Only after knocking on the first few doors, those feelings would be replaced by confidence.

The job was always the same, but the fear would always come back.

You don’t need to door-to-door sales.

But there might be something in your life that you’re fearing to do.

Things like:

  • Asking your boss for a raise
  • Talking about relationship problems
  • Or maybe starting your own business

Our minds build-up events like these into monsters. They become bigger than they actually are.

At times, we can be our own worst enemies.

Fix this by taking the first step (even if it’s a small one).

You’ll quickly see how the situation isn’t as bad as it seems.

You might even enjoy it :)

The best things in life, are on the other side of fear.

Thanks for reading,

Stay curious.
